Biography

Nicholas Sutcliffe was raised in Auckland, New Zealand and studied harpsichord, conducting, and organ at the University of Auckland.

Currently based in Sydney, Australia since February 2025, he is Assistant Organist at St Andrew’s Cathedral. Nick is freelancing as an organist and choral director and is available for weddings, funerals, and other church services as an organist or director. He is also an experienced choral ensemble singer, and acts as a deputy in several choirs when possible.

He lived in Christchurch, New Zealand from 2012 and was until the end of 2023 the Organist & Co-Director of Choirs at Christ’s College where he taught classroom Music & English, as well as being Assistant Housemaster of one of the boarding houses.

Nick spent some years as Associate Curator of the Christchurch Town Hall Organ, as well as being Chairman of the Town Hall Organ Trust until March 2025.

While at university, Nick won first prize at the NZ Organ Performance Competition, and has been a featured organist with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra workshopping and premiering a commissioned organ concerto. He was Organ Scholar of Holy Trinity Cathedral and also worked at both Dilworth School and St Cuthbert’s College as organist.

He has also previously served as Assistant Organist and Acting Director of Music of Christchurch Cathedral, Acting Director of Music at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland, as well as the Musical Director of the Christchurch Boys’ Choir, and more recently, Associate Director of Music at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral.
